  18. <p>     Hope for the future is fading among many Romanians, only
  19. four months after the overthrow of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
  20. Last week crowds of up to 4,000 opponents of the National
  21. Salvation Front, the transitional government that took power
  22. after Ceausescu's hurried execution, protested in Bucharest
  23. against interim President Ion Iliescu, whom they accuse of still
  24. sympathizing with communism. Romanian newspapers and witnesses
  25. reported that police beat some of the demonstrators, a charge
  26. denied by the government.

  28. <p>     The demonstrators believe the Front holds an unfair
  29. advantage in parliamentary elections slated for May 20. Some
  30. charge that the Front may attempt to rig the balloting. Critics
  31. say almost 90% of the group's members are former Communists.
  32. Iliescu's vow that a "return to the past is impossible" has
  33. failed to reassure his detractors. Says Sergiu Cunescu, chairman
  34. of the center-right Social Democratic Party: "People live in
  35. fear."
